The greatest invention for house-hunting Patriots fans
When I was house-hunting 20 years or so ago, I was faced with a dilemma: go to Open Houses or watch the Patriots. At that time, Drew Bledsoe – great servant of the Pats that he was – had started that habit of throwing interceptions off the back foot when under pressure, particularly in the second half. When that happened, my decision was easy – get way from the TV and go to Open Houses. It was partly a belief that if I was not watching the Patriots would come back and win.
And thanks to Bledsoe, I went to an Open House of the house we eventually bought.
But today’s Pats fans don’t have to make the choice between watching the game and buying a house. The greatest invention for Pats fans – indeed for all sports fans – is the DVR. Simply tape the game and watch it later. And for those of us not brought up on the belief that 60 minutes of football should take 3 hours to play, fast forward is a blessing.
So GO PATS – and go to Open Houses!

Open Houses thanks to the Patriots
I still think the Patriots should have run the ball when they got it back with 7:28 to go in the fourth quarter – they passed three times taking only a minute off the clock, in case for some extraordinary reason you were not watching – but Bill Belichick – yet again – has not called me for advice. Open Houses or Patriots vs Jets? No contest.
In my Open Houses and the Patriots post I quoted a survey which said that 64% of real estate agents did not schedule Open Houses when the Patriots were playing. I suspect that number may fluctuate somewhat with the stage of the season and the identity of the opponent. Well today, the Pats are playing the Jets, and a win for the Pats would secure the number 1 seed while also knocking out the Jets from the play-offs.

Open Houses and the Patriots
A regular discussion amongst real estate agents is the impact on attendance at Open Houses when the Patriots are playing. A couple of weeks ago when the Pats were playing the Jets, one agent was driving around Marblehead at 3 p.m. and said it was like driving through a ghost town.
The Massachusetts Association of Realtors surveyed its members recently and 64 percent said they do not schedule open houses when the New England Patriots play. This includes four percent who avoid all Sundays during football season; 20 percent who avoid Sundays when the Patriots are playing; and 40 percent who schedule their open houses either before or after the games. Thirty-seven percent of the respondents schedule open houses when it is most convenient for the client – even if it’s during the game.
The good news for sellers is that the Patriots do not play at 1 p.m. today or on the next 3 Sundays. (more…)
Time to think outside Marblehead Neck
You would like to buy a house on the water, but you have noticed the amount of traffic on the Neck and are concerned with exposure to storms.
So what to do?
The answer is: think outside the Neck.
Read Marblehead’s Unknown Oceanfromt properties and you may be surprised to learn that between Preston Beach and Beach Street there are 32 homes (and likely a few more when the FY2016 assessments are announced in December as this area is appreciating) with an Assessed Value over $2 million.
Two of these properties are currently for sale and details can be seen by clicking on 11 Crown Way and 2-4 Coolidge Road.
Crown Way has an Open House today 1-3 and both house will be open next Sunday (if not sold before then).
