Patriots’ record Super Bowl victory margin

As a numbers person I have been intrigued by the margin of victory – or defeat – the New England Patriots have registered in their Super Bowls .

Before the Belichick/Brady era the Patriots lost in 2 Super Bowls: against the Bears in XX (10-46) and Packers in XXI (21-35). But the 7 B/B Super Bowls have all been close:

Thus, Super Bowl XLI saw the Patriots record their largest ever winning margin in a Super Bowl. Had they kicked a FG in OT and had the Falcons then failed to score, the margin would have been the more traditional 3 points. But I am not complaining.

One other note: in that first Super Bowl appearance, XX, the Patriots were down 23-3 at half-time. In XLI they were down 21-3. There the similarity ends: in XX they were out-scored 23-7 in the second half; in XLI they thumped the Falcons 31-7 in the second half and OT.

GOAT.
