Brexit and the Olympic Medal Table

The German PR firm which includes the European Commission and European Parliament among its clients has published its version of the Olympic medal table, amalgamating the results for all 28 EU countries:

While the publication of the table may be no more than an example of the world-famous German sense of humour, including the UK’s 21 gold medals in the table did not go down well in the UK.

“Where was the EU in the early hours of the morning when our amazing athletes were training? It was UK National Lottery money which helped them develop into the world class athletes who have made this country proud.”

The PR firm admits that the table is not entirely fair: “The 28 EU countries have much higher quota of starting positions than individual competing nations,” it states. “The fictitious ‘EU team’ has therefore a better chance to win medals than the other participating countries.”

As I go to press, I have been unable to confirm reports that the EU is setting up two Commissions of Enquiry in Brussels: one to decide if they can introduce a regulation to force all EU media outlets to amalgamate the medal tally for the 28 (soon to be 27) EU countries in all articles on the Olympics; and the second to establish if there really is a German sense of humour. There is also some doubt whether these Commissions, if indeed they are established, will be able to complete their important work – which will obviously have to include field trips to the sites of all recent Olympics – before the start of the 2020 Olympics.
